Security Controller - Permanent Location: Onsite atBirmingham Airport (this role does not allow remote working due to the nature of the role) Location of your role within the airport: Passenger Search Area/Security Shift patterns: 12-hour shifts (days and nights) Salary: 35,500pa yearly bonus Grade level: Supervisor *All applicants must have lived in the UK for at least 3 years and have the right to work to be eligible for this role* Please note we can consider candidates who don?t have experience or a background in a Security Control environment, but you will have experience working in a fast-paced work environment and can think on the spot and make decisions quickly and effectively. Past successful candidates have normally come from a background in; big retail stores (e.g. Costco or Ikea) or Events Management with a high volume of people and have the operational piece. About the role: As a Security Controller, you?ll be at the heart of ensuring smooth, efficient operations within the Aviation Security Department. Reporting directly to the Security Duty Manager, you will lead the charge in managing resources for the Passenger Search Area and Remote Screening Room. Your role will be crucial in driving operational excellence, ensuring compliance, and improving overall performance. You?ll take charge of decision-making during security incidents, coordinating resources and responses to keep everything running safely and efficiently, while also prioritizing customer satisfaction. Key Responsibilities: Lead by example to foster a high-performing team environment that supports fairness, consistency, and professional conduct. Supervise and support operational activities of the LPS, Security Training Teams, and other relevant functions such as SOPs and CBT. Effectively communicate and engage with all relevant parties to share important information, using multiple communication methods. Promote operational efficiency by planning and delivering departmental targets, including queue times, throughput, staff welfare, and compliance. Optimise staffing levels in the security lanes and Remote Screening Room to meet throughput and compliance goals. Use data and tools (BLIP, CCTV, Incent) to inform decision-making and drive continuous improvement initiatives. Respond to unplanned events with adaptability, providing clear rationale for decisions. Maintain a high standard of customer service to protect the airport?s reputation and credibility, balancing security compliance with the customer experience. Ensure the safety of the operational team by promoting a safety culture and encouraging the reporting of near misses. Co-ordinate emergency responses to security breaches, fire evacuations, and other incidents, ensuring prompt and appropriate action. Complete daily and weekly equipment testing, maintaining compliance standards and escalating faults as necessary. Candidate Requirements: Proven experience in supervising large, diverse teams in operational environments. Strong organisational and time management skills, with the ability to prioritise and meet deadlines without compromising quality. Previous experience with data analysis and planning in a time-sensitive operational environment. Proficiency in Microsoft Office and other relevant IT tools. Experience in coordinating responses to emergency situations, including report writing. Excellent communication skills with the ability to influence and manage people effectively. Consistent, impartial, and empathetic approach when dealing with staff and customers. Demonstrated leadership by example, promoting a positive culture and the airport?s values. Ability to provide constructive feedback, coaching, and foster personal development within the team. A proactive, solution-oriented approach to problem-solving in challenging situations. Experience or knowledge of continuous improvement principles. Ability to obtain or currently hold Ground Security Officer and Ground Security Supervisor qualifications.
